“This filly has a beautiful demeanour, smooth walk and big overstep. She is a good size and wellproportioned. An ideal filly to target late 2YO and 3YO filly sprint & mile races.” - Nigel Blackiston
A son of Champion Sire SNITZEL, WANDJINA was a million-dollar yearling who become an outstanding thhre-year-old colt.
He was precocious enough to win at two and twice placed fourth in stakes races including the highly rated G2 Todman Stakes at Rosehill.
At three, Wandjina placed in the G1 Caulfield Guineas before returning to win the G3 Hayes Stakes (1400m) and then the G1 Australian Guineas (1600m). He later placed against older gallopers including DISSIDENT, in the G1 All Aged Stakes.
“The most important thing in a horse is to have speed.” Gai Waterhouse reflected. “He was the fastest yearling I had and then the fastest two year-old. Speed is something they have to have … and he has it.”
Out of the blue hen mare LA BAMBA, who has also produced Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint champion INSPIRATION and stakes-winners LUCKY UNICORN and PROVENCE, Wandjina retired to Newgate Farm.
This filly is from his first crop of foals. His yearlings on sale at public auction in 2018 averaged more than $140k at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale and $127k at the Inglis Easter sale.
REDEEMING LASS is an unraced daughter of RED RANSOM (USA), broodmare sire of 117 stakes-winners including nine Group 1 winners like SECRET AGENDA.
Her dam, Danglissa was one of the best race fillies of her generation, winning the G3 Furious Stakes and G2 Tea Rose Stakes on her way to victory in Sydney’s premier fillies race, the G1 Flight Stakes (1600m). She then ventured to Melbourne to place second in the G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on a slow track.
In what proved to be a 13 run three-year-old season, proving her toughness, Danglissa raced well in four Group class starts in the Autumn before winning the Group 2 STC Queen of the Turn Stakes (1500m), now classed a Group 1 event.
Redeeming Lass is one of 11 foals from Danglissa. She has produced SWEET REDEMPTION (by Snitzel), a sixtime winner of $400k in stakes. Those wins include the Group 3 Toy Show Hcp and Festival Stakes.
Being a granddaughter of SNITZEL, this filly is a three-quarter-sister to SWEET REDEMPTION (by Snitzel).
There are just 21 runners by SNITZEL or his sons out of mares by RED RANSOM. Fourteen are winners so far (67%) with four winning at stakes-class (19%).
In addition to Sweet Redemption, the other stakeswinners bred on this cross are:
- CHANCE BYE (Group 2 ATC Silver Slipper)
- ARBEITSAM (G3 ATC Neville Sellwood S. & 3rd G1 ATC Doncaster
- GOODFELLA (Listed ATC Brian Crowley S.)
A further six are stakes-placed, making a total of 48% of runners being stakes-performers on this cross!
Snitzel also nicks well with DANZERO, the sire of second dam Danglissa. All seven runners with this nick are winners, including Sweet Redemption and two stakes-placed horses ATHENA LASS (a close relation to this filly) and KLAMMER.
Trainer of Group 1 winners SUAVITO and LITTORIO, and a list of other stakes-winners, Nigel Blackiston trains a team of around 50 (30 in work at any time) at Flemington. He has focussed heavily on upgrading his stable over the past 3 years, with 90% of his stable currently young, inexperienced two and three-year-olds.
